NEWS BRIEF: ‘Be good, be loved, be blessed’: John P. Dolan installed as 5th bishop of Diocese

AVONDALE — The Diocese of Phoenix installed Most Rev. John P. Dolan as its fifth bishop Tuesday in a Mass filled with ceremony, joyous and reverent hymns and an address by the new bishop that called upon Catholics as well as people of all faiths to be “good, love and blessed.”

“We are counting that you, venerable brother, are able to exercise this office fittingly, given that you have diligently fulfilled your ministry as auxiliary of San Diego,” said Msgr. Luca Caveada, secretary of the Apostolic Nunciature in the United States to the Holy See, reading from the Papal Bull, the edict issued June 10 by Pope Francis naming Bishop Dolan the new bishop, succeeding Thomas J. Olmsted.

“Together with the intercession of the Blessed Virgin Mary of Guadalupe, principle patroness of your diocese, we earnestly implore for you the grace of the Holy Spirit, that you may be able to guide with the heart of the Father the faithful entrusted to your care to the joys of the Gospel.”

Back to school basics

As the temperatures in the Valley soar, the monsoon storms roll in, and the pools become too warm to be considered refreshing, our thoughts begin to turn to school. Some years, it seems to sneak up on us, whereas other years I find myself doing the countdown once smoke has cleared from the Fourth of July fireworks. There are five areas where I can subtly begin to make changes in our home in order to prepare the children for a smoother return to school.

We invite you to participate in discipleship and evangelization efforts at the Diocesan level, including the Together Let Us Go Forth ~ Juntos Sigamos Adelante campaign, the Charity & Development Appeal, the TV Mass, Catholic School Support 365, and through supporting our seminarians and Nazareth House. Family Faith Night with the Arizona Diamondbacks

Join parishioners from across the Roman Catholic Diocese of Phoenix and hundreds of churches from Arizona at the 2022 D-backs Faith and Family Night!

On this special evening, we will welcome incoming bishop, Bishop John P. Dolan, while thanking Bishop Thomas J. Olmsted and Auxiliary Bishop Eduardo A. Nevares. All three will be involved in the ceremonial first pitch.

There are four different ticket prices and seating options, plus $5 from every ticket purchased will support diocesan Catholic schools through the Catholic Schools Support 365 fund.

Pope entrusts new relationship with Indigenous to three holy women

QUEBEC CITY (CNS) — Meeting Indigenous survivors of residential schools in Canada, Pope Francis entrusted them and the journey of truth, healing and reconciliation to three women: St. Anne, Mary, and St. Kateri Tekakwitha.

“These women can help us to come together and start to weave anew a reconciliation that can uphold the rights of the most vulnerable in our midst and look at history without resentment or forgetfulness,” the pope said July 29, his last morning in Canada.

Before heading to the airport for a three-hour flight to Iqaluit, Nunavut, in the Canadian Arctic, Pope Francis met with two dozen survivors of residential schools from across Eastern Canada. Organizers said they included people from the Algonquin, Mohawk, Cree, Innu and Mi’kmaq nations.
